7 jigsaw puzzle tips to finish faster
Simple habits that help with any real cardboard jigsaw puzzle, from 300 to 2,000 pieces.
1. Start with the border
Flip every piece picture side up, then pull out the straight-edged pieces. Corners have two straight sides. Building the frame first gives you a fixed size and shows how much space each area of the picture takes.
2. Sort by colour and texture
Make small piles for each strong colour or pattern in the box picture — sky, water, foliage, buildings, text. PuzzlePal can sort scanned pieces into colour-coded groups for you.
3. Build the easy islands first
Faces, signs, bright objects and sharp lines are quick wins. Assemble them as separate islands, then slide them into place inside the border once their position is clear.
4. Beat plain skies and seas by shape
When colour stops helping, sort by shape instead: count the knobs (tabs) and holes (blanks) on each piece and group them. Try pieces in a row systematically rather than at random.
5. Use the box picture as a map
Picture the finished image as a grid of rows and columns. Knowing that a piece belongs in row 3, column 5 narrows a search from hundreds of spots to a handful. That's exactly what PuzzlePal does.
6. Light and posture matter
Work under bright, even light to spot subtle colour shifts, and use a board you can rotate or move. Short breaks help.
7. Scan a handful when you're stuck
Lay up to 20 loose pieces flat, picture side up and not touching, and take one photo. PuzzlePal marks a likely spot for each, so you can work through a whole pile at once.
